Connecting to Sacredness and Ritual
To live with positive intention we must believe in something grander and more powerful than ourselves. We must know that for the 100 or so years that we get to live on and enjoy this beautiful planet that we all have our own very special personal journey that we are traveling on. When we live with that kind of intention, it will give our life more meaning. It is critical that all of us, especially in the disjointed world we live in today, to have a sense of the sacred identified somewhere in our lives. We need ritual and ceremony. We need to understand our place in this vast universe.
What Sacredness Is
One of the dictionary’s descriptions of the word sacred is – worthy of respect; venerable. Yes, it is true that our life is worthy of respect and it is true that our whole existence needs to become more venerable. Unfortunately, we are living in somewhat of a “throw away” society. There is little that is long lasting. There was a time when you took your shoes to the shoe repair. There was a time when you darned your socks. There was a time when furniture was built to last. I am not saying that socks or shoes are sacred. I am saying that we need to have a certain amount of respect for everyone and everything. If we intend to live with more sacredness and honor the power of the natural laws of the universe, all of the other aspects of our life will become more important. We will pay attention in a whole new way.
The Importance of Sacredness In Your Life
Sacredness is important because when you make a conscious decision to live a sacred life, your daily activities and duties are experienced with responsibility, integrity and joy. Your life becomes a ritual that connects you to the Universal support system. Everything we do can be considered a ritual and rituals connect us to our magic, our wizard, our inner life, our soul. The more you believe and trust that much of what you are involved in is sacred, it can become a powerful tool to bring peace and tranquility into life. You begin to live in the now by realizing that each moment of your life is sacred. You become much more attuned to the details of all of your experiences as you accept the importance of every aspect of the day. You take the time to think your thoughts more consciously. You learn to feel your feelings and understand your emotions because they are sacred. You cherish your loved ones with compassion, honor and forgiveness because they are sacred.
What Sacredness Provides
When you intend to experience life itself as a sacred event, that action alone will provide the impetus to live with honor and joy in all that you do. Every day will bring an opportunity to be in awe of yourself, your loved ones and our beautiful planet. You will find that intending sacredness along with a daily ritual and a daily spiritual discipline is what will make your life richer and more significant. Sacredness allows you to go gently into your day. You will learn to discard the nonessentials and pay closer attention to your authentic self.
You can start now by setting aside a few moments each morning to intend that you will go gently into your day with a new sense of who you are. As you say your positive affirmations you can include that you will do your best to incorporate and integrate the rituals important to your well being.
Intend to Honor your Sacredness with RitualThere are so many ways to bring ritual into your life. There is your morning and evening yoga and/or meditation, quiet time for reflection, journaling, reading spiritual messages, saying positive affirmations, stopping by a church, lighting a candle, burning incense and sage, talking to your God/Goddess. There are angels, guides, teachers and even fairies. There are many kinds of divination cards as well.
The more we honor all aspects of who we are (spiritual, emotional and physical) the more alive and beautiful we become. I have candles safely lit when I am at my home office and home space. I tend a small altar with my favorite icons and photos of my ancestors that I honor with fresh flowers. I put coins in my Lakshmi (Goddess of Abundance) box. I put small rocks around my Buddha statues. There are many ways to bring ritual and honor the spiritual in your life. I say keep it simple, low cost and easy to maintain.
If you need to have structured ritual and sacredness there are so many religious churches, temples and synagogues. There are spiritual groups and metaphysical and theosophical societies. American Indians that work with the natural laws, rituals and traditions of Mother Earth. Christianity that honors the ancient spiritual belief systems. Prayer that comes from the Bible. Eastern philosophy that includes Buddhism and Taoism.
The healing arts that focus on working on improving the sacredness of the self. Religious Science and Metaphysics that work with positive spiritual messaging systems. Theosophy uniting all philosophies and religions.
Whatever you are drawn to is where you belong. All spiritual belief systems are valid if their philosophy is for the betterment of the self and all others. Choosing a spiritual belief system is a very personal, individual experience. You must do it according to what your heart feels. What resonates for you and makes you feel good.
It is important to remember that joining hands in a religious service on Sunday is not enough. It is not enough to sing out “let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me” at our church service and then be opinionated, angry and resentful for the rest of the week. Everyone needs to take that spiritual aspect of themselves and bring that into their lives every day of the week. It is not enough to be kind and compassionate only when there is a crisis. Every day there is a crisis somewhere and human kindness is the antidote.
Start now by honoring your higher self by incorporating some kind of sacred ritual into your day. Your spirit will come alive by calling on your spiritual helpers to guide you. It is a simple exercise that has so much power attached to it.
